In the drawings Kantor has been making and posting on social media since early March 2022, and which KOW is now showing, he references these experiences. Kantor learned to draw in the air-raid shelter - now he takes current images from the war in Ukraine, especially those of refugees, and draws them in the style of his youth, with charcoal on paper. They are terrible images. The suffering of war experiences a stillness and depth of feeling in the sheets that the television and Internet images that flash past us every day can hardly produce.
Kantor writes: Latest News" series is a specific chronicle of humanity's Total Disaster that is illustrated here by childish drawings depicting destruction and suffering in Ukraine. All I have seen throughout my life since childhood to today was nothing but constant series of murderous wars arranged by the political dictatorships from the East to the West and all the rest."
Istvan Kantor, who also performs as a singer of industrial and electropop, has provoked institutional and state orders since 1979 with performances in which he spilled his blood and appeared as an uncompromising activist. His current drawings, however, speak a different language. Like Chto Delat, Kantor currently seems only able to note how far the catastrophe has gone, and he turns in rather quiet, very touching tones to the suffering that is omnipresent, reminding us that at some point we had hopes that no longer exist. And perhaps that's all that can be said for the moment.
