Lili Reynaud-Dewar has developed a complex body of work in recent years that consistently explores concepts of cultural, social, and emotional identity. Her objects, video installations, films, and magazines (Pétunia), created either individually or in collaboration with friends or students, evoke the spirit of such transgressive figures of twentieth-century cultural production as Josephine Baker, Guillaume Dustan, Bjarne Melgaard, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Rather than centering her work around any one topic or debate, Reynaud-Dewar aims to translate social and political questions into the realm of aesthetics, revealing inherent contradictions in the process. She consciously breaks with conventions and traditions to examine and challenge them, ultimately fostering a space for contemplation where viewers are compelled to form their own perspectives and interpretations.
The video opens with a long tracking shot through Memphis, a North American city with a rich historical background as an epicenter of the American slave trade, the civil rights movement, and a vibrant hub of Black music culture. The artist stages and explores the cultural appropriation of “grillz” – popular dental jewelry made of precious metals worn over the teeth – while discussing it with local comedians. The video culminates with a performance involving the recitation of a socialist-feminist manifesto. As the title TEETH GUMS MACHINES FUTURE SOCIETY suggests, the video encapsulates guidelines for a near future shaped significantly by (AI) machines and new social orders around the globe. In drawing upon historical references and culturally appropriating a cult object from Black music culture, the artist establishes a connection to urgent social questions surrounding racism, the marginalization of minorities, and how these are addressed in the present.
