THEO는 2023년 7월 21일부터 8월 18일까지 이한(Han Lee) 작가의 개인전 『The Interpreter』를 개최합니다.

“소통을 위한 질서”

매 순간 우리는 자연과 마주하고 있지만, 자연이 우리에게 어떤 이야기를 전달하고 있는지 사소한징후들조차도 미처 알지 못하고 있다. 실제로 우리는 수많은 언어가 존재하는 세상에서 살아가고 있다. 하지만 우리가 실제로 이해할 수 있는 언어들은 매우 제한적일 수밖에 없다. 이에따라 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 사람들 사이에는 소통의 한계와 장벽이 생기게 되고 심지어는 같은 언어를 사용하는 사람들일지라도 서로 대화가 통하지않을 때가 다반사이다. 과연 어떻게 해야 우리는 언어적 장벽을 극복하고, 더 나아가 자연과의 대화를 이뤄낼 것인가?

이번 전시명이자 작품명이기도 한 ‘The Interpreter’는 이러한 질문에 고찰하고해답을 찾고자 하는 목적성을 지녔다. 작가는 작품을 통해 소통하기 위해서는 상대 객체가 주는 무질서하고방대하게 들어오는 일련의 신호들을 그 순서에 맞게 제대로 나열해야만 바르게 이해할 수 있는 명확한 의미가 되는 것을 보여주고 있다. 이를 위해 전시장 바닥을 가득 채운 질서 없이 흩어진 작은 징후와 같은 신호들이 정렬되고 질서를 찾았을 때의모습을 정면에 위치한 작품이 인터프리터로써의 역할을 수행한다. 이처럼 작가는 자연이 우리에게 이미 충분히많은 메시지를 주고 있지만 우리가 자연과 말하는 방법과 규칙을 모르면 그저 이해하지 못하는 무질서한 작은 불빛에 지나지 않는다는 것을 이번 전시를통해 이야기하고 있다.

현대 사회는 이미 글로벌화를 통해 다양한 언어뿐 아니라 문화, 관습들이 충돌하고 있으며, 이에 따라 발생하는 갈등들은 인터넷과 소셜미디어와 같은 소통의 창구가 다양해짐에 따라 우리 일상 곳곳에서 목도되고 있다. ‘The Interpreter’는 자연과의 소통방식에 대한 하나의 답을 제시하고 있지만 그 의미는 우리의 의식과 지각을 기반으로 한 상호 이해를 통해 소통을 위한 질서를 확립하기 위한 방법으로확장될 것이다.

작가 이한(Han Lee)은 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 다재다능한 디자이너이자 뉴미디어아티스트이다. 웹에서의 인터랙티브 아트로 주목받기 시작하면서부터 뉴욕,서울, 제주도, 광주, 상하이, 광저우, 예루살렘, 하이파 등 뉴미디어 아티스트로서 전 세계 여러 곳에서 작품 전시 및 공연을 펼쳤다. 관객이 감정적으로 몰입할 수 있는 몰입감 있는 유쾌한 경험을 제공하는 그의 작품은 SK, LG, 삼성과 같은 대기업 협업 전시뿐 아니라 예술의 전당, 수원시립미술관및 ISEA와 아트센터 나비가 공동으로 한국 ACC (국립아시아문화전당)에서 개최한 세계 최대 연례 국제 미디어 아트 심포지엄에 선정되어 전시된 바 있다.

"The Orderly Objects for Communication"

Every moment of every day we are incontact with nature, but we are not always aware that nature is trying to tellus a story. We live in a world of many languages, but the languages we canactually understand are very limited. This creates communication barriersbetween people. So how can we overcome the linguistic barrier and achieve adialog with nature?

『Theinterpreter』, which is also the name of the exhibition,aims to explore and answer these questions. Through his work, the artist showsthat in order to communicate, the chaotic and vast series of incoming signalsfrom the other object must be arranged in the right order to create a clearmeaning that can be properly understood. To this end, the work at the frontplays the role of an interpreter, showing how the lights scattered withoutorder on the floor of the exhibition hall, are supposed to be arranged. In thisway, the artist is saying through this exhibition that nature already gives usenough messages, but if we do not understand how to communicate with it, theyare just chaotic little lights that we don't understand.

Modern society is already experiencing a clashof cultures and customs, as well as different languages through globalization,and the conflicts that arise from this can be seen in our daily lives as meansof communication such as the internet and social media become more diverse.'The Interpreter' presents one answer to the question of how to communicatewith nature, but its meaning can be expanded to a way to establish an order forcommunication through mutual understanding based on our consciousness andperception.

Han Lee is a multidisciplinary designer andnew media artist based in New York City. Since first gaining attention for hisinteractive art on the web, he has showcased his work around the world as a newmedia artist, including New York, Seoul, Jeju Island, Gwangju, Shanghai,Guangzhou, Jerusalem, and Haifa. His works, which provide an immersive andplayful experience for audiences to emotionally engage with, have been selectedin collaborative exhibitions with large corporations such as SK, LG, andSamsung, as well as at the Seoul Arts Center, Suwon Museum of Art, and theworld's largest annual international media art symposium organized by ISEA andArt Center Nabi at the ACC (Asian Cultural Center) in Korea.
