Daiva Kairevičiūtė. BLACK DOTS IN A WHITE SEA | ARTLECTURE
  • Daiva Kairevičiūtė. BLACK DOTS IN A WHITE SEA
    1

The exhibition features the artist’s drawings and photographs, and the connections between these works are suggested by the vocabulary of the dance medium. Then we may also feel the artist: sometimes drawing, sometimes mocking, sometimes going out with her camera to check her own relationship with dance. Life circumstances, properties and contexts of objects become her dancing partners; she accepts an inner invitation to unleash the concentrated energy of imagination through movement.  The rhythms composed by lines, colours, light and bodies complexly create a choreography of action. Using curves, straight lines and shadow halftones, the artist remains at the epicentre – both drawings and photographs record the characteristic dynamics of movement, the estimation of its potential and its critical meanings imprinted in colour. The dialogues that determine the form are easily readable, and the possibility of resistance, metamorphosis and transformation is grasped through the memory of the body.

In the drawings, the white levelled environment and the highlighted figure create the task of movement, balancing the inner equilibrium, developing and controlling the vitality and impetuousness emitted by authentic forms and transporting it by magical transformations to the space-time of the "cosmic dance" exalted by the philosopher A. Mickūnas. The evidence of its existence in reality is also verified in the images created by her photographs.

Whether the author is articulating the dance with loneliness in an intermedial way, whether she is creating a visual score for our sensory capture, alluding to the scenes of memory, or whether she is checking the obedience of our thoughts and emotions to those long lines that orchestrate the movement of thought – only by accepting the challenge of the dance with the exhibition, will we be able to experience our own vision and maybe hear the author's choreographic interplay of media.

All we have to do is to start connecting the two black dots in the white sea.

Daiva Kairevičiūtė (b. 1971) is a graphic artist, painter and photographer. Graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1996 (MA in Graphic Arts). Since 2002 member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, since 2019 member of the Lithuanian Photographers’ Association. The author actively participates in Lithuanian and international art events and exhibitions. She has held 18 solo shows of graphic art and photography and received 5 creative grants. In her drawings, the artist creates figures based on the principle of negatives, containing elements of both the aesthetic "divine" and "chthonic-demonic" worlds, which have a place in the souls and thoughts of each of her characters. The play with allegories is carried over into the black and white photographs.

Daiva Kairevičiūtė’s exhibition "Black Dots in a White Sea" will be on show at Pamėnkalnio Gallery until 7 January 2023. Entrance is free of charge.

Sponsored by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, Lithuanian Artists’ Association.
