Paul Barbu (b. 1986) is an artist living and working in London. He studied architecture at ‘Ion Mincu’ University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, sculpture at UNArte Bucharest and visual arts at Kingston University in London. He has exhibited at Artworks Gallery (Cambridge), Stanley Picker Gallery (London), Kingston University (London), Romanian Cultural Institute in London and Strata Gallery (Bucharest).

His solo show ‘Once, on the far side of yesterday’ presents the eponymous site-specific installation at the first floor of the gallery and can be visited between April 28 and May 28, 2022, Monday to Saturday, from 12.00 to 19.00. Curated by Ana Daniela Sultana, the project is part of the exhibition program put together by gallery director Ana Ștefania Andronic (BUZU).

“The site-specific installation titled ‘Once, on the far side of yesterday’ by Paul Barbu takes us to a place where time and space ceases to exist, a setting where the dialogue between materials prevails over an exhibition discourse inclined to politicization, while the focus of the artistic message is on the construction process. With its polystyrene ball dunes, the work is configured as a utopian diorama, as a scenographic composition or as a landscape ‘to the sea and to the sun’ - to use the artist’s exact words. It is, however, an eminently ephemeral artistic gesture. At the same time, ‘Once, on the far side of yesterday’ offers a comprehensive insight into the artistic practice of Paul Barbu, a practice situated at the crossroads between sculpture, installation and site-specific interventions, strongly influenced by his background in architecture (and by creators such as Carlo Scarpa, Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava or Alvaro Siza)” - Ana Daniela Sultana
