This is even more irritating and eerie than the detachment of the human voice from the body that produces it. This first became possible with the invention of the phonograph – patented as a “talking machine” in 1877 by Thomas Alva Edison. In the 1960s, Canadian composer R. Murray Schaefer coined the word 'schizophony' for a sound that is separated from its original context.
V01ces is an exhibition about the (human) voice in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). AI is pattern recognition in large amounts of data plus machine learning or conditioning. Systems trained appropriately for voices can not only imitate voices, but also recognize languages and accents - and identify them according to criteria such as: Classify and evaluate age, ethnicity, gender, economic status.
The artists draw a disturbing picture of the (human) voice in the age of AI from different perspectives. At the end of the two-year VOICE:over project series, we are at the beginning of the era after the oral turn.
