The increase in urban densification and the disappearance of public space due to market-oriented commercialization and unregulated developments, which can be observed in both western and centrally planned urban contexts, can be viewed as one of the most significant aspects of global neoliberal reality. The absence of any systemic competition after the end of the Cold War must be seen as the central trigger for these spatial metamorphoses. In place of various, competing concepts in the organization and design of social and spatial life plans, the global collective dream of a commodity-shaped future, an alleged "prosperity for all" has emerged.
The title of the project, “Voids of Presence”, is in a certain way a metaphor that describes the remaining free, excess, common spaces and also opens the space for resistant forms of design. How can a “void” regain community, social and political significance? How do these spaces acquire new functions and meanings and how do we revise the gaps in the territories of our imagination?
Four interventions in urban space connect Galerie Nord with the Spoiler Action Space in Moabit and the House of Statistics / House of Materialization. In addition, an accompanying program offers discursive analyzes for the design of current and future gaps.
