“MORI Building Digital Art Museum: EPSON teamLab Borderless”

Technology Group 'teamLab' has opened the world's first digital art exhibition in Tokyo this summer (The exhibition is now opening from June 21 in Odaiba area, Tokyo).

In a vast complex, three-dimensional 10,000 square meter space, 520 computers and 470 projectors create a completely new world, the likes of which have never been seen before(The exhibition hall is composed of five sections and uses projectors and computers over 1,000 meters of space).

The exhibition is permanent with no specific period, and while the digital works of installations are displayed in each separate spaces, they are characterized by interconnectedness with each other. It is available to be free to touch and feel, and sometimes to follow several spaces without a destination. This is possible because the boundaries between works and walls do not separate each piece of art from the next one.

Also, works and audience will blend in with each space, inducing organic movement rather than repetitive vision. This may be to create a new experience based on the presence of people, not a work. Toshiyuki Inoko, a founder of the art collective responsible for the museum, explains as follows. ‘teamLab Borderless’ explores the new relationship between humans and nature, via the convergence of art, technology, design and the natural world. “If an artist can put thoughts and feelings directly into people’s experiences, artworks too can move freely, [and] form connections with people”, he says. It’s an astounding testament to the link between human consciousness, nature and the universe.

Then again, the exhibition hall is divided into five zones: Borderless World, Athletics Forest, Future Park, Forest of Lamps and the En Tea house. Even though you watched it many times, teamLab says 'no two visits will be the same'. The exhibition " Borderless, " which opened under the theme of the world's most futuristic and progressive exhibition hall, will become a valuable time to explore the world with your body directly.

What is teamLab ?

teamLab (f. 2001) is an art collective, an interdisciplinary group of ultratechnologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world. Various specialists such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects form teamLab.

teamLab aims to explore a new relationship between humans and nature, and between oneself and the world through art. Digital technology has allowed art to liberate itself from the physical and transcend boundaries. teamLab sees no boundary between humans and nature, and between oneself and the world; one is in the other and the other in one. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous, borderless continuity of life.
