Dear Body tackles the issue of body-shame prevalent on social media and challenges each of us to think differently. It converts negative self-image into ‘selfie-eulogy’ in the form of ‘blasons’, a poetic form in which the smallest body part such as an eyebrow or earlobe becomes the object of adoration. 21st century blasons - photographs, illustrations, and video clips - are woven into a dynamic, ever-changing on-line digital installation, a gallery of contrasting and very personal pieces. Simple to engage with, Dear Body invites contributors to become part of an online community of body-positive voices.
Three artists have been invited to offer up launch ‘selfie artworks’: E. M. Parry, Shabnam Shabazi and Paula Varjack. Each artist’s blason offers a uniquely individual view on their emotional and mental state and invites us to empathise and to celebrate so we may all feel less alone. We hope these brave works by our three launch artists will encourage Londoners to submit their own blasons to add to the Dear Body virtual gallery. For those who want inspiration and practical guidance, project creator and Artistic Director Anna Furse is leading free Zoom blason-creative workshops in June and July (book online at https://chatspalace.eventbrite.co.uk). Participation and submission are open to everyone, and anonymity is guaranteed.
The Dear Body virtual gallery will grow and diversify until it closes its doors in August 2021.
