The exhibition project THE LINE BETWEEN US, realized in collaboration with the laif agency and the laif foundation, addresses the challenge of depicting and debating the realities of queer life.
Is society's treatment of the LGBTQIA* movement a barometer for the state of our democracy? The exhibition project THE LINE BETWEEN US, realized in collaboration with the laif agency and the laif foundation, addresses the challenge of depicting and debating the realities of queer life. Given the current increase in violence against queer people, the project takes on added urgency. In the exhibition, the eleven photographers question normative attributions from the perspective of the queer community. Through photographic self-portrayals, portraits, reportages, documentaries, and installations, they offer a broad insight into their work, which encompasses both an aesthetic and political agenda. The visual concepts of their contributions focus on the power of empowerment and togetherness, on invisibility as a survival strategy for queer people in hostile environments, and on the price of visibility. At times glamorous, at times relentless, at times quiet and seemingly casual, the photographs reveal a multifaceted panorama of photographic appropriation of a fluid representation beyond stigmatization and discrimination. With their self-determined depictions, the artists open our eyes to the everyday lives of queer people and reveal diverse perspectives on the effects of continuous oppression as well as the extraordinary strength that emerges through resistance. The project THE LINE BETWEEN US raises awareness of respectful coexistence and ultimately poses the question of how the medium of photography can initiate social transformation.
