Cine Window is delighted to announce our first solo exhibition, ‘Hang on a minute’ by Joe Richardson, opening on March 29th 2021.
Joe will be presenting new works made specifically for the Cine Window, referencing objects and images from his family history – including the Maddock clocks of Winsford (one of which still stands in the town hall today), and the Richardson blacksmiths that used to occupy Delamere Street, to explore his own methods and experiences of managing anxiety and mental health.
In a site specific video work, a clockmaker sways from side to side in the motion of a metronome against a backdrop of Winsford street scenes past and present. Each scene remains on screen for a minute whilst the figure continues to sway marking every passing second. The work encourages viewers to ‘hang on a minute’ and wait with the work. Richardson intertwines both archival and original contemporary images of Winsford to reference Deepstore, the underground archive that rests beneath the town preserving our National Archive.
In the other windows we see Joe in a repeated horseshoe shaped yoga pose, presented the right way up for good luck and upside down for bad; a blacksmiths anvil suspended in a state of uncertainty by a weather balloon, and finally an outsize brown paper bag ready to satisfy the most voracious need for retail therapy.
Richardson has previously undertaken residencies in New York City, Beijing, China and Stokkøya, Norway. He is a recipient of both the Red Mansion Art Prize and the Cass Art Prize. In 2020 and 2019, Richardson received commissions from Universal Music Group to create a collection of video works which are on permanent display at their London Headquarters. Richardson is a Central Saint Martins, MA Fine Art Graduate (2018).
This exhibition has been made possible with support from the DCMS Cultural Recovery Fund awarded as part of Cheshire West & Chester Council, Cultural Services.
