“Deflate[1]”

강재원(b.1989)은 그간 미래의 조각에 대한 관심을 기반으로 3D 프로그램상의 모델링 작업을 다양한형태의 현실 조각으로 연계 혹은 파생하는 작품을 발표해 왔다. 현실과는 다르게 작용하는 프로그램상의물리법칙에 의해 만들어지는 디지털 조각 방식은 작가에 의해 새로운 조각의 조형 방식으로 작동하며, 동시에‘디지털 조각 방식에 의해 형성되는 감각’을 제시한다.

PATTERN 1에서 PATTERN 3까지 이르는 여정 동안 Inflatable이나 3D프린트 등의 방식을 통하여 프로그램상의 디지털 조각들은 현실의 시공간으로 옮겨졌으며, 이 과정에서 조각들은 따로 또 같이 서로 영향을주고받으며 새로운 조형미를 생산/양산한다.

이 중, Inflatable은 작가의 작업 중 가장 잘 알려진 형태로 전시 중에는 송풍장치를이용하여 지속적으로 바람을 주입하여 형체를 유지하는 반면 전시가 끝나는(작품이 철수되는) 순간, 장치의 전원이 꺼짐과 동시에 조각은 바람이 빠지며 형체를잃어가는데 이 과정에서 또 다른 형체가 형성된다. 이번 개인전 『PATTERN 4』에서는 위의 과정, ‘Deflate’를 중심으로 구성된다.[2]

Inflatable 조각은 지속적으로 주입되는 바람을 통해 형체를 유지하지만 정지한 상태이다. 반면 새로 발표되는 신작은 정지된 모습의 형체이지만 3D프로그램상의다양한 기능을 설정, 시뮬레이션 과정을 통해 팽창한 형태의 디지털 조각에서 바람이 빠지는 변화의 과정을담고 있다.

또한, 송풍장치에 의지하여 형체를 유지하는 것 자체가 목표였던 Inflatable 조각의 정지된 시간성과는 반대로 정지된 형체의 실물화된 조각들은 작가의 조형적 미감에 의해선택된 몇 개의 프레임으로 구성된다. 결국 전시되는 작품의 구성은  프로그램상에서 Deflate 되는 폴리곤변화 과정의 시간성을 담고 있으며 조각의 수축 과정에 대한 유추와 상상이 가능하다.

현실과 다르게 운용되는 디지털 시공간에서 탄생한 디지털 조각이 현실의 시공간으로 실물화되는 전체의 과정은 지난 PATTERN 시리즈의 타임라인 연장선에서 그 자체로 변모하는 디지털 조각의 가능성과 작가가 탐구하는 ‘미래의 조각’ 개념에 대한 무한한 가능성을 품고 있다.

또한 ‘팽창한 형체’의 조각에 대한 디폴트값을 스스로해제하고 수축한 형체가 아닌 ‘수축의 과정’을 담으려는 작가의새로운 시도는 기존의 패턴들과 함께 마치 과거와 현재를 오가는 ‘ctrl+z/ctrl+shift+z’기능과 같다. 작가의 조각들은 전통적인 조각의 제작 과정과 미래를 내포한 현재의 다양한 방식을 블렌딩(blending)하며 앞으로 나아간다.[3]

전시 공간에는 일(一)자와 시계방향 두 가지로 Deflate 되는 과정의 조각들이 전시되어 있다. 함께 비치된 모니터의 영상을 통해  과거Deflate에 대한 시도로제작된 ‘Exo7_simulation’과 함께 이번 전시작의 Deflate시뮬레이션 과정 또한 감상할 수 있다.

"Deflate"

Based on his interest in futuristic sculpture, Kang (b. 1989) has beenpresenting works that link or derive 3D programmatic modeling into variousforms of real-world sculpture. The digital sculpture method, which is createdby programmatic physical laws that operate differently from reality, works as anew sculptural method for the artist, and at the same time presents the"sensation formed by the digital sculpture method.

During the journey from PATTERN 1 to PATTERN 3, the programmatic digitalsculptures were transferred to the space and time of reality through methodssuch as inflatables and 3D printing, and in this process, the sculpturesinfluence each other separately and together to produce and mass-produce newsculptural aesthetics.

Among them, Inflatable is the most well-known form of the artist's work,and during the exhibition, the sculpture is continuously injected with windusing a blower to maintain its shape, but at the end of the exhibition (whenthe work is removed), the sculpture loses its shape due to the loss of wind atthe same time as the power is turned off, and another shape is formed in thisprocess. This solo exhibition, "PATTERN 4," is organized around theabove process, "Deflate”.[4]

Unlike the inflatable sculpture, which maintains its shape through the windthat is continuously injected into it, the new work, which is in a stationarystate, contains a process of change in which the wind is removed from theinflated digital sculpture through the process of setting and simulatingvarious functions in the 3D program.

In addition, unlike the frozen temporality of the inflatable sculpture,whose goal was to maintain its shape by relying on a blower, the physicalizedsculptures of the frozen shape are composed of a few frames selected by theartist's sculptural aesthetic, but they contain the temporality of thepolygonal change process that is deflated in the program, and it is possible toinfer and imagine the deflation process of the sculpture through thecomposition of the exhibited works.

The entire process of a digital sculpture born in a digital space-time thatoperates differently from reality, and then materialized in a real space-time,is an extension of the timeline of the past PATTERN series, and holds infinitepossibilities for the possibility of a digital sculpture that transforms itselfand the concept of 'future sculpture' that the artist explores.

In the exhibition space, sculptures in the process of being deflated in twoways, one clockwise and one counterclockwise, are displayed, and through thevideo on the monitors, visitors can also enjoy the simulation process ofdeflation of this exhibition along with 'Exo7_simulation', which was created asan attempt to deflate in the past.
