Nellie Bly, a journalist who became an icon of the times against discrimination and prejudice, was born on May 5, 1864 on the Cochrane Farm in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. She became a journalist in 1880 when she wrote an article in Pittsburgh that contradicted a sexist column in the Pittsburgh Dispatch.
In 1887, he entered 'New York World' as a reporter and covered a story about the abuse inflicted on patients at a mental hospital on Blackwell Island, which was reported by Joseph Pulitzer the same year. Her article caused a great sensation and served as an occasion for the government to improve the situation on Blackwell Island and improve the health care system in the United States. She later wrote articles on women's rights, criticism of male chauvinism, and suffrage of women, raised her voice continuously and made major changes to society.
'NELLIE BLY MAKES THE NEWS' is an animated documentary about the legendary journalist who changed the game for women in reporting before women even had the right to vote. Examining boundaries between reporting and storytelling, it creates a dynamic portrait of a woman who refused to accept the status quo.
While no longer a household name, the trailblazing journalist Nellie Bly (1864-1922) is definitely an enduring American icon.
Some hundred years after its completion, her record-breaking, 72-day round-the-world trip inspired an episode of The American Experience, a puzzle-cum-boardgame, and a rollicking song by history fans the Deedle Deedle Dees.
“In my time, women usually had their life stories written for them. But I didn’t like the story I was given, so I wrote a new one.” That’s Nellie Bly, the pen name of Elizabeth Cochrane. The story she wrote—in a newspaper in 1887, and, figuratively, of her life—would change the course of journalism in America.
