The Mudhouse Residency is designed to provide a cultural immersion: living, working and dining in the mountain village of Agios Ioannis. The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, photographers, writers, choreographers and composers. Meals are served family style and group trips have been organized to tour the ancient Minoan ruins at Mochlos, visit the Florentine monastery at Toplou, swim in the blue green waters of the Libyan sea and hike across the Thripti mountain range. Artists are invited to present a slideshow lecture or reading on their work for fellow residents, and participate in a closing exhibition at the Residency’s conclusion.
The Mudhouse will host two sessions in 2018, June 18- July 2 and July 9- July 23. Submissions will be accepted and reviewed in three rounds, or until all Residency positions have been filled. Deadlines for application submissions to the 2018 Summer Residencies are October 15, January 15, and April 15.
The Studio Residency is designed for professional artists with an established studio practice seeking the time and space to realize an individual project. The Studio Residency includes 24 hour access to a shared studio space equipped with natural light, cross ventilation and electrical outlets, tables, chairs, and easels. Dancers and choreographers are provided use of a separate clean space with sprung wood floors. Access to the Music house concert hall and grand piano is available to one composer-in-residence per session. Studio residents are warmly invited to present an artist's lecture within the duration of the Residency and participate in the Residency's closing Exhibition. The fee for the Studio Residency program is $2200 USD.
The Independent Residency provides the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project, be it a novel, screenplay, video, or photographic series. Crete is a visual feast for the eyes, arresting in natural beauty but also a complex system of modern life existing in the footprints of ancient civilizations. Witness a shepherd's sheep-shearing festival, hike across olive orchards or spend the time contentedly holed up in the peaceful solitude of the mountain village of Agios Ioannis. The village is abundant in charming gardens and writing nooks. The Mudhouse is pleased to host a reading, screening or viewing of works in progress as desired. The Independent Resident also has the opportunity to contribute to the closing Mudhouse Residency Exhibition. The fee for the Independent Residency program is $1800 USD.
All Programs include the accommodations of the resident for the duration of the Residency, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner each day within the village.
