서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리는 2021년 2월 15일부터 3월 15일까지 2020년 하늘광장 갤러리 공모선정작 전시 《박제풍경》을 온라인 개최합니다. 작가 장용선은 조각과 설치, 인터랙티브 아트 등의 다양한 형식으로 생명의 본질과 가치에 대한 질문을 던지는 입체 작업을 해 오고 있습니다. 작가는 최근 동물의 뼛가루나 폐식물과 같은 우리 사회의 부산물들을 소재로 한 작업을 선보여 왔습니다. 이번 개인전 《박제풍경》에서는 제초된 풀과 함께 캐스팅한 시멘트 벽돌을 중심 재료로 새로운 설치 작품들을 소개합니다.
작품에 사용된 풀들은 녹지정비 사업의 결과물로 발생한, 우리가 살고 있는 도시 곳곳에 뿌리내렸었지만 지금은 버려진 식물들입니다. 작가는 질서정연한 사회와 도시 환경의 경계에서 밀려나 그 용도가 폐기된 생명들을 수집하고 이들에게 새로운 자리와 정교한 형태를 부여합니다. 한때는 살아있었던 물질들 속에서 작가는 수직적 도시와 통제된 자연, 삶과 죽음의 이질적인 공존을 발견합니다. 미약하지만 끈질긴 자연의 생명력을 형상화한 전시를 통해, 우리 도시의 생태를 다시 돌아보고 보다 나은 공생의 가능성을 함께 모색하는 기회를 마련하고자 합니다.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Sky Plaza Gallery will hold an online exhibition of Tenacious Landscapes, the selection from the Gallery’s 2020 contest, from February 15 to March 15, 2021. The artist Yongsun Jang has created spatial works that ruminate on the essence and value of life through various mediums such as sculptures, installations, and interactive artworks. Jang has recently made use of by-products of our society such as finely ground animal bones and foliage waste as materials for his pieces. Tenacious Landscapes features cement bricks molded with weeded plants.
The plants used in the artworks are a result of urban and landscape redevelopment projects, cast aside as waste after being uprooted from various city spots. The artist collected the fragile greenery that was disposed of and shoved to the fringes of our cityscapes, transposing them to a new location and imbuing them with a delicate form. Jang observes within these once-thriving plants, a disparate coexistence between a vertical city and a constrained nature, between life and death. Through this exhibit of nature’s fragile and yet tenacious life force, we hope to provide an opportunity to look back on our urban ecology and seek out a possibility for a better coexistence.
