node 5:5 was created by the collaboration between three creative minds: Ryoichi Kurokawa, a media artist and the winner of a Golden Nica award; Hiroshi Matoba, a designer/programmer; and Ban Seong-hun, who studies interactive arts and free-form display at KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology. The three collaborators planned and created this audio-visual installation work through “Kinetic Media Lab,” a part of ACT Center’s 2016 ACC_R Creators in Lab program.

The artwork consists of video projects, kinetic laser beams, and module wavefield syntheses.

10 laser beams are reflected on a prism and projected on a screen. The projections are overlayed on the video image shown on the screen. The images and sounds fill the 18-meter high, 50-meter wide space of Space 1, resulting in a truly dynamic space.  Through this work, the artists sought to provide a “new type of multi-sensory experience.”

About the Artists
Director:  Ryoichi Kurokawa
Ryoichi Kurokawa has been one of the leading talents in the audio-visual art scene for the last 15 years. His works feature experiences with a wide range of media aimed at creating a completely new language based on the combination of sounds and images. Currently living in Berlin, the artist continues to explore the co-existence between art and nature, and order and chaos. He won a Golden Nika award for digital music and sound art at 2010 Ars Electronical. He also performed and showcased his works at institutions and festivals across the world, including London Tate Modern 54th Venice Biennale, Berlin Transmediale, Shanghai e Arts, and Barcelona MACBA.

 Creator: Hiroshi Matoba
Hiroshi Matoba is a designer/programmer/artist. Having studied product/sound design, he currently creates hand-made sequence systems. In 2007, Matoba created Overbug, a software sequencer featuring the circular notation system. This creation earned him invitations to Transmediale, and other media art festivals in Italy, Argentina, Taiwan, and Seoul. He also created installation works with hardware devices, such as Light Valve (Installation for DIY Transparent Display) and Denki Domino (Light and Sound Domino). He is currently living in Berlin.

Creator: Ban Seong-hun
Ban studied material engineering in the university, and enrolled in the doctorate course at the KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology in 2011. His academic interests are interactive arts and free-form display, which he balances with his creative endeavors. Most of his works took the form of massive co-creations where he collects the feedbacks from the viewers and incorporate them into the creative process. Virtual Mob and People collected the body movements of the viewers, and Sound Planet and City of Voices collected their sounds.
