‘다층적 탐색을 통한시간의 서사화’

이윤희 작가는 그동안 서양의 종교/신화적세계관과 서사의 집대성인 단테의 ‘신곡’(神曲)을 (모티브로) ‘삶의 역경을극복하며 자신의 운명을 개척해나가는 한 소녀의 무용담’을 정제된 이미지들로 아름답게 표현하는 것에 집중하였다. 이번 개인전 『Palimpsest, 다층적 탐색 통한 시간의 서사화』를 통해 작가는 기존에 다루었던 백색을 넘어 물질이 지닌 물성에 집중하고, 신곡의 작업에서 벗어나 좀더확장된 이야기 하고자 한다.

‘Palimpsest’ (펠림세스트)는 여러가지 의미를 지닌단어이다. 글자를 지우고 그 위에 다시 글을 쓸 수 있도록 만든 양피지(羊皮紙 ) 라는 의미와 다층적인 것을 나타내는 어원적인 의미를 가지고 있으며, 오래전에 퇴적 되었으나 새로운 퇴적 환경과 평행을 이루지 못한 채 남아 있는 퇴적물을 의미하는 지질학적 의미도가지고 있다. 또한, 19세기 영미 여성작가들의 문학을 비평하는이론으로 당시 까지 남성들이 주류가 됐던 문학 행위 속에 참여하는 여성 작가들이 느꼈던 불안, 저항성을표출하는 공간을 의미하는 문학 비평적인 의미도 담고 있다.

이처럼 다양한 의미를 가진 ‘Palimpsest’ (펠림세스트)라는 단어에서 시작한 이번 전시는, 서사를 좀 더 다층적으로 표현하고 흙을 다루는 작업 과정 자체에도 집중한다.이전 작업은 흔적이 남는 것을 지우고 완전무결(完全無缺)함 추구하였다면, 아무리 지워도 작업위에 남는 흔적과 층을 통해 매체의다층적인 면을 탐색한다. 그래서 흙과 이미지를 쌓아 올린 후 깎아내고 남은 흔적들은 지웠다. 그리고 이 과정을 수 없이 반복하며 작품 위의 이미지는 점점 늘어나게 된다.늘어난 이미지들은 이야기들이 축적되는 시간, 또는, 그시간 에 남은 감정과 깨달음이 인쇄된 작가의 고백처럼 느껴진다

‘An epicof time through multi-layered exploration’

Yunhee Leehas focused on expressing the story of a girl who overcomes life's adversitiesto pioneer her own destiny. The refined images are based on Dante's 'La DivinaCommedia (1321)', which is the culmination of Western religious andmythological worldviews and narratives. In this exhibition, LEE explores themateriality of matter beyond the white color she has previously focused on. Theaim is to tell a more extensive story, distinct from the previous series ofwork, 'La Divina Commedia.'

Theword 'palimpsest' has multiple meanings. The term has an etymological meaningof parchment paper that allows for erasing and rewriting of writing, and ageological meaning of sediments that were deposited long ago and remainunaltered by the new depositional environment. It is a theory of literarycriticism that critiques the literature of nineteenth-century Anglo-Americanwomen writers. It has a literary-critical meaning as a space for expressing theanxieties and resistances of women writers participating in literary activitiespreviously dominated by men.

Theexhibition focuses on the process of working with clay to create a layerednarrative. It begins with the word 'palimpsest,' which has multiple meanings.While her previous works aimed for perfection by erasing traces, in this pieceshe explores the multilayered aspects of the medium through the traces andlayers that remain. This process is repeated multiple times, resulting in anaccumulation of images above the artwork. The increased images create a senseof accumulating stories, or the artist's confession of the emotions andrealizations from that time.
