OSTKREUZ photographer Johanna-Maria Fritz is there when Butcha's war crimes become visible. She sees and documents the destruction in Kyiv and Irpin, sees the horror on the streets, the destruction of war. Her series In the garden a grave shows us fragments of this war. Unfiltered and close to people, with an empathetic view of the situation. Her pictures are moving testimonies to the current tragedy. About the creation of the photographs she says: “We stayed in and around Kyiv for two weeks and focused heavily on Irpin. Later we also visited Vasilkov and other surrounding towns. But the places in the north remain strong in my mind. Above all, Butscha, one day after the liberation, we were almost the first journalists to visit the place. People were happy about the end of the occupation, but the wounds of the war were still there. Everywhere killed and executed Ukrainian people lay on the streets, in houses, gardens or cellars. It was only after the liberation that the residents of Butcha understood the extent of the terror ."

The photographers Helena Lea Manhartsberger and Laila Sieber travel to western Ukraine together. Her series Where You Can Hear the Silence is a sensitive portrait of the first weeks of the war away from the front lines. You meet people who deal with the new reality in very different ways. Some are preparing to flee the country, others to defend their homes and stay. The complexity of the war becomes visible in the confrontation with individual fates. About the title of their series, the two say: "The silence that can be heard sometimes diminishes when there is loud laughter in conversation. Then she screams again when worry about relatives who are still on the run leaves you speechless. But she is a constant companion in this war. The two photographers accompany the fugitives to this day. In video messages, they continue to tell their stories in the exhibition.
