Steven He ≪Harusari≫

런던 기반 작가 스티븐 히(Steven He)의 한국 첫 개인전 ≪Harusari≫를 개최합니다.

이성은 기획, 챔버 주관으로 열리는 이번 전시는 중국계 영국인 작가로서의 유년기 기억과 이주 경험이 공적 공간에서 어떻게 ‘번역’되고 변형되는지를 탐구합니다.

“전시는 '하루살이'를 라는 중심 은유를 통해 이러한 주제를 구체화한다. 2026년 키네틱신작 <하루살이>는 중국의 한 수변 마을에서 보낸 유년 시절의 기억에서 비롯되었다. 그는 개울에서 하루살이 유충을 채집해 병에 넣어 양말 서랍 속에 숨겨 둔 일을 회상한다. 어느 날 성충으로 변태한 하루살이들은 서랍을 여는 순간 날아가 버렸다. 그에게 하루살이란 과거와 현재가 변증법적으로 어우러진 하나의 결정체이다. 생애의 대부분을 물속에서 보내다가 성충이 되어 빛 속으로 날아올라 ‘하루만 사는’ 하루살이의 삶은, 일곱 살의 나이에 영국으로 이주한 작가 자신의 경험과 깊이 공명한다. 그는 자신을 영국인도, 중국인도 아닌 존재로 인식하며 그 어떤 범주로도 규정되기를 거부한다. 대신, 서로 충돌하는 이질적 경험들이 교차하고 뒤섞이는 경계 지점에서 안정을 찾는다. 어린 시절의 기억을 퇴적물 삼아 새로운 서사를 끊임없이 중첩해 나가야 했던 그의 삶은 바로 이 지점에서 하루살이의 존재 방식과 겹쳐진다.“

We are pleased to announce the opening of ≪Harusari≫, the first solo exhibition in Korea by London-based artist Steven He, starting February 26th at Chamber(Seoul, Korea)

Curated by Seongeun Lee and organized by Chamber, this exhibition explores how the childhood memories and migratory experiences of a Chinese-British artist are translated and transformed within public spaces.

"The exhibition crystallises this theme through the central metaphor of the "mayfly." His 2026 kinetic work, Harusari, stems from the artist's childhood memories of growing up in a waterfront village in China. He recalls collecting mayfly larvae from a stream and hiding them in a jar inside of a sock drawer. They one day transformed into adults and to his surprise flew away as he opened the drawer. He sees the mayfly as a dialectical synthesis of both the past and present. The life of a mayfly; who spends virtually all of its life underwater only to emerge briefly as a “one day living thing;” resonates with the artist’s own experience moving to the UK at the age of seven. He refuses to identify himself as being either British or Chinese. Instead, he finds comfort at the intersection of where these discordant experiences collide and mingle. This is where his life, which has had to constantly layer new narratives over the sediment of childhood memories, overlaps with the nature of the mayfly”.
