하늘과 바다가 마주하는 자리

적도 부근 무풍지대에서 만나게 되는 바다는 아스라한 수면 위로 올망졸망한구름 몇 점만이 떠있고,푸른 하늘은 수면 위를 잠식시킨다. 그리하여 하늘과 바다가 마주하게\

 되는 푸른 수평선은 위로는 하늘이고, 아래로는 바다가 분명하다.짐작만 할 수 있을 뿐, 구분할 수도, 구분해야할 이유도 찾지 못한다. 하늘과 바다가 뒤섞여 좀처럼 그 낯빛을 가늠하기 어려운 푸른 수평 선상에서, 의존가능한 시각 요소는 그저 무용지물에 불과하며, 빛, 그 자체를 감각하는 과정을 통해서야 간신히 그 경계를 받아들일 수 있다. 이처럼, 이번 전시는 다양한 방식으로 빛을 감각하며 경험할 수 있는 ‘평온의시간’을 관객에게 제안하고자 한다.

한 겨울, 전시장에서펼쳐지는 하늘과 바다가 마주하여 생긴 수평선의 고요함을 닮은 작가의 푸른 수평과 물결 그리고 여러 색채의 빛의 향연은 작가의 경험 속 가장 위안이되었던 순간들에 대한 기록과 같다. 누구에게나 오래토록 기억하고 간직하고 싶은 평온의 순간이 있을것이다. 작가에게는 끝없이 펼쳐진 고요함을 닮은 수평선이 마음을 가라앉히고 일상의 번잡함에서 벗어나게 해주는 매개체였으며, 반짝이는 빛과 일렁이는 물결을 마주하며 치유 받았다고 한다. 그러나모든 것이 찰나이듯, 그러한 순간들은 대부분 한순간에 사라지고 휘발되어 버리는 성질을 지니는데, 김은주 작가는 바로 이 순간을 사로잡아 작품을 통해 영속시키고 있는 것이다.

오래전부터 수평 상태는 끝없이 가장 안정된 상태이자 균형의 상징으로여겨져 왔다. 잠시 전시장을 방문하여 머물다 가는 관람객들의 마음 역시 하늘과 바다가 만나는 수평선안에 물결의 촘촘하고 포근한 느낌을 감각하며 내면의 고요한 평온을 찾길 염원해 본다.

* 김은주(b. 1993) : 작가는 물질을 인식하는 데에 필수적인 ‘빛’이라는 소재를 중심으로, 입자와파동의 관점에서 찰나에 머무르고 사라지는 것들을 작품을 통해 가까이 감각할 수 있게 연구해오고 있다. 작가의작품 속 등장하는 빛의 입자와 파동들은 여러 색채들로 다양한 물질적 감각을 표현하고 있는데, 이 과정을통해 그녀의 빛의 파동은 ‘보이지 않는 세계’를 향한 감각으로시작하여 다시 ‘보이는 세계’에 도달하고자 나아가고 있다.

Where sky and sea meet

In the windless zone near the equator, the sea is an azure surface withonly a few wispy clouds floating above it, and the blue sky encompasses thesurface. Thus, the blue horizon, where sky and sea meet, is clearly the skyabove and the sea below. You can only guess, but you can't tell, and you see noreason to. On the blue horizon, where the sky and the sea blend together andit's hard to tell the difference, the visual elements that we rely on are useless,and we can only barely accept the boundary through the process of sensing lightitself. In this way, the exhibition proposes a "time of tranquility"where the viewer can experience light in a variety of ways.

The artist's blue horizon, waves, and multicolored feast of light, whichresemble the calmness of the horizon between the sky and the sea in the middleof winter, are a record of the most comforting moments in the artist'sexperience. Everyone has moments of tranquility that they want to remember andcherish for a long time. For the artist, the horizon, which resembles anendless expanse of tranquility, was a medium to calm his mind and escape thehustle and bustle of everyday life, and he was healed by the shimmering lightand rippling water. However, like all things fleeting, most of these momentsare transitory and volatile, and it is these moments that Kim captures andperpetuates through her work.

For a long time, the horizontal state has been regarded as the moststable state and a symbol of balance. I hope that the viewers who visit andstay for a while will also feel the dense and enveloping feeling of the waveson the horizon where the sky and the sea meet, and will find inner tranquility.

* Eunju Kim (b. 1993): The artist has been studying the material oflight, which is essential to the perception of matter, from the perspective ofparticles and waves, so that we can feel the things that stay and disappear ina moment through her works. The particles and waves of light in her worksexpress various material sensations with various colors, and through thisprocess, her waves of light begin with a sense of the 'invisible world' andthen move on to reach the 'visible world'.
