조각 섬

이번 전시의 주제인 ‘Islet’은 작은 섬을 의미하는 사전적 의미를 담고 있음과 동시에 해사(海事) 용어로는 조석 간만의 차에 따라 수면 위로 드러나기도 하고 물에 잠겨 사라지기도 하는 조각 섬을 의미한다. 이는 시간과 시점에 따라 그 형태가 변화하며 실존하는지조차 불분명한 형태로,처음에는 신비로움과 호기심을 자극하지만 결국 공허함과 허무함, 그리움만이 남게 되는 공간이다.

이한빈 작가는 단일한 배경에 그려진그림이 하나의 조각 섬이 되는 것을 상상한다. 그녀의 작업은 겉보기에 귀여운 화면과 천진난만한 색감과함께 곤란한 상황들이 숨겨져 있어 감상자에게 일순간의 웃음을 선물한다. 그러나 이 웃음은 그녀의 작품을깊이 있게 감상할수록, 마치 천장의 야광 별처럼 서서히 빛을 잃어가며 공허한 빛으로 변해 가는 느낌을받는다. 마치 작은 조각 섬이 화창한 날 수면 위로 그 모습을 드러냈다가 서서히 물속으로 잠식되어 가는것처럼, 작품들은 그리움과 허무함이 합쳐진 채 그 잔상만 남게 된다.

작가는 표면적으로 교차하지 않는 개체사이에 존재하는 보이지 않는 연결고리를 인식하고 이를 시각화하는 방식을 탐구한다. 일상에서 마주하는감각적 경험들을 하나의 미술 재료로 삼아 해체하고 재조합함으로써, 추상적이고 알 수 없던 작품들 사이에숨은 연결고리를 찾아내는 것이다. 이번 이한빈 작가의 첫 번째 개인전 『Islet』은그녀의 작업 세계의 맥락을 이루는 조각 섬 안에서 관객이 우연과 선택의 과정을 거쳐 구체화된 각 작품들의 새로운 연결고리를 찾는 장을 만들고자하였다.

조각 섬은 독립적으로는 존재하였다가 사라지는특성에 따라 외딴 유령 섬으로 남게 된다. 그러나 관객이 발견하게 될 연결고리를 통해 조각은 하나의섬으로 이어질 것이며, 그렇지 못하고 남게 되는 섬들은 비장한 소리를 내며 다가오는 수레에 담겨 사라지고다시 잔상으로 남게 될 것이다.

Islet

'Islet', the theme of this exhibition, has a dictionary meaning of smallislands, but in maritime terms, it also refers to a small island that canappear on the surface or disappear under water depending on the differencebetween the tides. It is a space that changes its form depending on the timeand point of view, and it is unclear whether it even exists, stimulatingmystery and curiosity at first, but eventually leaving only emptiness,emptiness and longing.

Hanbin Lee imagines a painting on a single background that becomes an islet.Her work presents a seemingly cute images and innocent colors, with troublingsituations hidden beneath, giving the viewer a momentary laugh. However, thedeeper you look into her work, the more you feel that this laughter is slowlylosing its light and turning into an empty glow, like a glow-in-the-dark staron the ceiling. Just as an islet appears on the surface of the water on a sunnyday and then slowly disappears under the water, the works become a combinationof nostalgia and emptiness, leaving only an afterimage.

The artist explores how we perceive and visualize the invisibleconnections that exist between objects that do not intersect on the surface. Bydeconstructing and reassembling the sensory experiences we encounter in ourdaily lives as art materials, Lee finds hidden connections between abstract andunknown works. In 『Islet』, Lee's first solo exhibition, she aims to create a space where viewerscan find new connections between each of her works, which were materializedthrough a process of chance and choice, within the context of the islet thatforms the context of her work.

The islet exist and disappear independently, leaving them as isolatedghost islands. However, through the connections that the viewer will discover,the piece will lead to one island, and the islands that fail to do so will becarried away in an approaching cart that makes a loud noise and disappears,leaving behind an afterimage.
