사진은 끝없이 미래를 향해가는 과거다. 셔터를 누르는 순간 과거가되지만 이 모든 것은 현재를 위한 것이 아니다. 미래에 무언가를 기억하기 위한, 기록을 위한 매체다. 기억과 기록은 단순하지 않다. 인간과 인간을 둘러싼 무언가가 담기기 때문에 관계와 떨어져 존재할 수 없다.미래를 위한 이 과거는 현재의 관계에 영향을 받기도 한다. 사진은 시간을 부유하는 존재다. 시간을 부유하며 우리의 모든 순간에 개입한다.
여기서의 이방인은 사진 속에 덩그러니 남겨진 끝나버린 관계, 더이상존재할 수 없는 그 미소들을 말한다. 어쩌면 현재에 발 붙이고 있는 우리와 달리 부유하는 사진들을 이방인으로지칭할 수 있을 수 있다. 유효하지 않은 관계의 과거들은 사진의 유용함을 잃은 지 오래다. 폴더 깊이 숨겨진 그들과의 기록은 평소에는 존재조차 잊고 지낸다. 중요한것은 폴더가 열린 후다. 갑작스럽게 열린 문 사이로 유령들이 쏟아진다.더이상 일어나지 않을 그 장소에서의 그 미소들. 끝없이 기록된 과거들. 미래가 없는 과거들. 현재가 없는 과거들. 하드에서 하드로, 또 하드에서 다른 하드로 몇개의 숫자로, 애매모호한 폴더명으로 이동을 거듭했을 유령들.
부유하고 있던 낯선 것들을 현실의 마찰로 지워냈다. 아무것도 아닌것이 되기 위해, 또 다른 어떤 것이 되기 위해. 나의 의지로끌어들인 모든 것들이 유령이 되거나 빈 종이가 되었다. 완전히 아무것도 아닌 것이 되거나 무언가 전혀다른 것이 되었다. 지나가고 쓸모 없는 것들을 계속해서 마주하며 그것들을 위한 나만의 장례를 거행했다. 촬영된 당신도, 촬영했던 나도 이 순간이 지나 완전히 사라진 후에는이 이방의 것들은 존재했다는 사실조차 잊어버릴 것이다.
Ausstellungsort
이 작업은 최초로 시도한 2014년 이후 2016년 본격적으로 시작되었다. 처음에는 시도에 가까운 작업이었다. 독일에 와서 이를 심화시키고 있던 중 지역의 한 공공기관에서 장소를 제공 받아 전시할 기회가 생겼다. 진행 중인 작업을 전부 정리하고 재구성하여 <Stranger’sTheme>이라는 주제로 한 달 정도 전시를 진행했다.
Erase-Delete
첫 번째 시리즈는 <Erase-Delete>다. 과거 연인 9명의 사진을 프린트해 아주 작은 단서만 남기고 지웠다. 각 사진과 지우개 가루는 하나의 틀 속에 보관했다. 망각을 위한적극적인 행위를 했지만, 어떤 형태로든 존재하는 이미지는 관계와 망각 사이에서 발생하는 아이러니를 보여준다.
Ghost Dust
두 번째 시리즈 <Ghost>는 앞선 시리즈와 정 반대되는양상을 보인다. 망각의 과정 속에서 어떤 것을 남길 것인가에서 어떤 것을 지울 것인가의 문제로 전환되었기때문이다. <Ghost>에서는 일반적인 풍경 속에 지워진 형태만 남아있다. 구체적인 모든 정보는 사라지고, 형태의 흔적만 남아있다. 풍경은 여전히 구체적이지만, 지워진 인물로 인해 의미를 읽을 수없는 이미지가 된다. 풍경과 인물 사이의 불균등한 정보는 서로가 서로를 더욱 이질적으로 만들어주는 장치가된다.
RYWB1,2,3, Black_complete
세 번째 시리즈 <BRYWB>는 한 개인의 경험에서 보편적경험의 형태로 표현의 확장을 시작한 작업이다. 사진을 지울 때 발생하는 순서대로 색을 모으고, 재구성했다. 파란색(Blue)와빨간색(Red), 노란색(Yellow)는 지우개 가루가 발생하는순서다. 사진을 지우는 경험에서 느낀 것을 바탕으로 보편적인 이별의 과정을 떠올렸다. 흰색(White)는 대부분의 이미지가 지워진 사진을 모았다. 모든 이미지를 잃음으로써 사진은 물성만 가진 혹은 이미지를 가졌다는 과거만을 품은 아무것도 아닌 것이 되었다. 마지막으로 검은색(Black)은 이별과 미련에 관한 누군가들의 빼곡한독백을 옮겨 적은 것이다. 유튜브를 사용하던 중 우연히 이별 관련 노래에 달린 댓글을 읽게 되었고, 익명화된 공간에 구체적인 미련의 감정을 독백으로 적어 내려간 것이 흥미로웠다.이를 한 장의 종이에 빼곡하게 옮겨 적었고, 수 많은 이들의 이별의 감정이 뒤섞이고, 겹쳐지는 지점에서 검은색을 발견했다. 이 때문에 ‘검은색’은 다른 색들과 결이 다르다. 모든 이별이 그렇듯, 쿨하지만 쿨해질 수 없는 것처럼. 흰색과 검은색은 서로 상충하지만 함께 존재한다.
Defragment
네 번째 시리즈 <Defragment>는 <BRYWB> 작업을 하는 과정 중에 발생하는 주변의 이미지를 스캔해 모은 것이다. 사진을 지우며 마주한 것은 그때 그 인물만이 아니다. 우연히 그자리에 있었기에 함께 기록되어버린 주변의 형태가 눈에 들어왔다. 촬영할 때 그랬던 것처럼 주변의 모든것들은 촬영자의 의지와 관계 없이 존재한다. 완전히 지워지기 전, 그들을주인공으로 한 사진을 남기기로 했다. 원래 담긴 사진은 모두 지워졌지만, 주변인에서 중심으로 자리를 옮길 수 있도록 했다.

다섯 번째 시리즈 <The reason for our breakupwas the force of gravity>는 동영상이다. 지우개 가루를 담아 제작한조각이 불완전한 기반 위에서 중심을 잡으려고 노력하는 것을 촬영했다. 울퉁불퉁한 플라스틱 뚜껑 위에서, 기울어진 바닥 위에서 서로를 기대며 쓰러지지 않으려고 노력하지만 계속해서 실패한다. 연인들이 서로를 맞춰 가다가 서로의 무게를 견디지 못하고 이별하는 것을 표현하려고 했다. 중심을 잡는 것이 불가능하다고 판단되었을 때, 우리는 헤어질 수밖에 없었어. 라고 말하는 것을 중력에 빗대었다. ‘애초에’ ‘어쩔 수 없는’ 것으로 이별을 바라보게 되는 지난 관계를 떠올리며.

Stranger’sTheme
Photography isthe past endlessly heading for the future. This is because it is a media torecord and recollect. Photography does not exist, however, withoutrelationships. It is affected by the relationship between the past and thepresent. Thus, photography is seen as something in substance floating in thetime. In particular, the digital photography flies inside the monitor like aninvisible ghost. And it can be deleted completely with few times clicking assoon as it lost its value.
The stranger inthis context refers to the relationship that lies between the photography andobjects. The objects, ex-partners, in the photography are no longer valid asthe relationship becomes the history. Memories are compiled and hidden undernameless folders and forgotten. What is important is the moment when the folderis opened. Ghosts are outpouring from a sudden cracking. The Ghosts - a smilingface in irreversible place, documented moment, the past being unable to be thepresent and the future, from hard drive to another one, with some numbers andfinally landed in the random folders.
My work beginswith making them realize. The ghosts are materialized into photographic paperand I started erase them. Those become small pieces of eraser powder in orderto be SOMETHING or NOTHING. Everything has turned to the empty paper and thus,a ghost. After disappearing myself and the objects taken in the photography, weall slowly forget the fact that there were strangers somewhere.
I started thiswork in 2014. After couple of trials, the actual work has been carried outsince 2016. The first series is <Erase-Delete>. Nine ex-partners printedwere erased til small parts remained. Each of photography and eraser powers arestored in individual frame. It is irony that I erased the photography toconsign the memory to oblivion, but the image lasts in a certain form anyhow inthe end.
Second series<Ghost> shows the opposite aspect. The question moves to “what to erase”from “what to remain” in the process of oblivion. The objects were erased andremained in the ordinary background. This background, however, cannot be fullyunderstood in detail due to the erased place. Inconsistent information of theobjects and background make them more disparate.
The third series<BRYWB> broadens the concept of ‘personal’ experience to the commonthemes. It reconstitutes the cycle of relationship with color variation; ‘Blue’, ‘Red’, ‘Yellow’, ‘White’ and ‘Black’. It represents the progress of separation. ‘White’ indicatesthe relationship that has lost images and turned into an empty paper. ‘Black’refers to a someone’s monologue of breaking up. The letters come from thecomments written in farewell songs in Youtube as there are many differentregret and lingering desire. I found the black color in a way that stories areblended with complicated emotion and come across an overlapping point. This isbecause the ‘Black’ has different perspective from others. In other words, youtry to be easygoing but, the bottom of your heart simply cannot. Likewise,black and white color are controversial but, they are counterpart to each otherin the farewell emotion.
The forth series<Defragment> is the scanned surrounding image of the <BRYWB>. Thoseunexpected images are presenting against the photographer’s will. Therefore, Ileft some parts just before they are completely gone. The original photographyis all erased, but some remaining parts become a major in the new context.
The last series<The reason for our breakup was the force of gravity> is a video work,which replays the moment of breakup. I was filming pieces struggling to make abalance on the imperfect ground. They lean together not to fall down at a tiltand on uneven plastic lid. Yet, it fails repeatedly. I compare the force ofgravity with that “we cannot help but say good bye” spoken by weary people.
