Benefits:
Balmoral fellowships are residential fellowships; continuous presence is obligatory.
The fellowships are endowed with 1,400 € a month.
Two fellowships are awarded for the period of three months. Four fellowships are awarded for the period of nine months. All residential fellowships run from June each year.

Artists’ residence Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems was founded in 1995 and is a place of reflection, artistic production, discussion and meeting. It supports visual artists from all over the world by awarding artists-in-residence fellowships.

The Künstlerhaus is publicly presented through lectures, concerts and exhibitions. Works by the fellows are regularly shown in ‘Made in Balmoral’, the Künstlerhaus’s exhibition space in the Bad Ems city centre. Schloss Balmoral sees itself as an interface between artistic work and theoretical reflection and as a point of contact between former and present fellows. Balmoral intends to build a bridge between the artists' present and their future.

Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic genre or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to enable deeper mutual creative cross-fertilisation among the resident artists. It will also lead to a more intensive specialist exchange of ideas with external artists, speakers, teachers, curators, etc.

Visual Arts, fashion and jewellery have been enriching each other for centuries. Now, in the still-young millennium, and building on trends from the 20thCentury, this tradition of structural rapprochement and discursive interaction is seeking new ways of expression. Not only questions of common features and analogies in design and structure are at the centre of focus today, but especially also questions about the potential in terms of content, which is often visionary and anticipatory, of the triad of Visual Arts – Fashion – Jewellery.

The democratisation and popularisation of fashion and jewellery have made not only the boundaries between commerce and artistic practice more fluid, but also those between the social systems in which they are embedded.

This is the context in which we are offering 2019 Residential Fellowships with a focus on the theme of

»Luxury and Glamour? Artistic Perspectives in Fashion and Jewellery«

An examination of the crossover of Visual Arts with fashion and jewellery should be the primary concern. Together with the Fellows we would like to explore the aesthetic, material, performative, social and cultural implications, and so the potential, of fashion and jewellery as social identifier. This is not just about the utility function of fashion and jewellery; the focus is on the one hand on the formal and conceptual exploration of media opportunities and boundaries, and on the other hand on interaction with relevant questions in the interplay between luxury, glamour, globalisation, transculturality and sustainability.

Fellows will have the benefit of competent partners for expert discussion, experimental work or just swapping experiences from our collaboration with the Faculty of Design of the Trier University of Applied Sciences and its study areas of Gemstones and Jewellery in Idar-Oberstein and Fashion Design in Trier.

For all fellows of a year funded by the Ministry of Science, Further Education and Culture and the foundation for culture of Rhineland-Palatinate a final exhibition at the historic rooms of the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck will be realised at the beginning of the following year resp. the end of the fellowship.
