A notable characteristic linking many of the contemporary British painters represented by Messum’s is their strong attachment to place. This is true of none more so than David Parfitt. In 1978 he moved into a fine old house directly overlooking the Thames at Strand-on-the-Green in Chiswick. The water rises and falls with the tide, the sun and seasons come and go, there is the neverending passage of boats and birds and people. For hours Parfitt sits at his first-floor balcony, or in his little front garden, watching the world go by, observing it, painting it.
