Dutch artist Marleen Sleeuwits (*1980 in Enschede) kicks off the first half of the 2019 gallery exhibition calendar with FICTIONAL SPACES, her first solo show in Germany.
With one of her most recent interventions, Marleen Sleeuwits will translate the gallery’s exhibition space into a new dimension. Parallel to this we present a series of large-format photographic works with striking examples of her fictional spatial constructions.
A playful approach to side specific elements has always been a characteristic of Marleen Sleeuwits’ artistic work . What has always caught her interest to create interventions is not so much architecture in itself but the classically built space. It is rather the design of the same with a portfolio of exchangeable surfaces. These surfaces and materials place their inhabitants into a fluid world of supposedly individual and constantly changing projections. “How does man encounter these projections? How does he live in this cosmos of built surfaces? And what are his emotional states within this global design language? asks the artist. Instead of giving an answer to these questions Sleeuwits photographic body of work and installations highlights them for the viewer by „Blurring the line between the two- and three-dimensional“.
