SomoS presents works by Paloma Aguirre, Katrin Bäcker, Caty Forden, and Álvaro Sendra González. They address contemporarily poignant themes such as cross-cultural connection, the surreal, diverse realities, mental perceptions, and a sense of place.
SomoS unveils “Bewilderness”, an exhibition comprised of four Berlin-based painters from four different countries united by a surreal, figurative visual language with which they create independent, strange, and sometimes absurd situations and stories. The exhibition conceptually traverses realities evoked by bewilderment; rich residential, urban, or metaphorical spaces, infused with the dreamscapes, fantasy, and memories of wilderness.
While living within the fast-paced, tumultuous, and often confusing nature of our modern landscape, it is increasingly common that we experience a sense of Bewilderness; a term coined by these four Berlin-based visual artists to refer to this contemporary mental state, mood, or feeling of perplexity, astonishment and desperation. In conversation with this all-too-familiar phenomenon, “Bewilderness'' explores non-linear and non-hierarchical layers of consciousness through which each artist respectively combines the fantastical with the real to create new realities. In this exhibit, the artists synergize their diverse backgrounds through a shared visual language to display their fresh views of magical realism and surrealism that draw attention to the unique character of our modern landscape. The exhibition follows an inner logic that often does more justice to the confusing complexity of life than a coherent picture.
