Rigger& Painter

전시 『Rigger』는 Rigging과 Painting 의 속성을 바탕으로 작가 함성주의 작업 세계를 탐구하고자 한다.Rigging 이란, 게임이나 애니메이션에서 3D 캐릭터의모델링을 살아 움직이게 하는 가상의 뼈대를 만드는 작업을 말한다. Rigger는 Animator가 생산한 캐릭터 이미지의 껍질을 제거하고, 그 안에캐릭터의 관절과 뼈대를 생성하여 생명력을 부여하는 작업을 하는 사람들을 말한다. Rigger와 Painter는 본인이 감각하는 이미지를 그려서 생명을 만들어낸다는 공통점을 가지고 있는 창작자들이다.

함성주 작가 추구하는 ‘새로운 사실주의적 회화’는, 눈 앞에 실재하는 대상이 카메라 알고리즘 통해 가상의 디지털 매체에 왜곡되어 보여지는 대상의 형상에서 시작한다. 그리하여 작가의 그림은 사실보다 좀 더 입체적인 상태로 그려지게 된다. 함성주작가가 작업에서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 부분은, 그림 속의 대상과, 그대상을 바라보는 작가의 시선 통해 표현되는 이미지의 변화와 해석이다.

함성주 작가에게 Painting은, Rigging의과정과 같이, 자신이 이미지화 하려는 대상의 해석과정에서 발생되는 불필요한 것들을 없애는 것이다. 작가 함성주는 Painter로서 본인이 재해석하고 재정의한 대상의이미지를 온전히 전달하기 위해 필요 없는 레이어와 과정을 하나씩 생략해가는 과정을 통해 작업을 만든다. 전시 『Rigger』의 작품들은 생명력을 방해하는 불필요한 색을 최소화한무채색의 형태를 갖은 회화와 화면의 ‘본질’만을 남긴 것들이다.

작가들은 대부분 작가의 의도나 관람자의 해석에 따라 작품의 의미가 부여되는 시대에 살고 있다. 흔히말하는 회화의 종말을 맞이하고 있는 것이다. 함성주 작가는 회화의 종말에 맞서서, 그림 그 자체로서 예술성과 본질을 그대로 마주하려 한다. 전시 『Rigger』는 Rigger가정적인 캐릭터에 생명력을 불어넣기 위해 불필요한 레이어를 걷어내듯, 사실주의 Painter가 감각하는 회화 본질에 대해 생각할 수 있는 장을 마련하고자 한다.

Rigging involves developing a digital skeleton thatanimates a 3D character in video games or animation. Those who perform rigging- riggers - create joints and bones to bring the character to life based on theanimator's image. Rigging and painting both share the aim of creating life-likeimages.

Sungjoo Ham's ‘new realistic painting’ begins withthe object's shape in front of the eye. The camera algorithm distorts theshape, which is then displayed on a virtual digital medium. Consequently, theresulting paintings are depicted with increased three-dimensionality comparedto reality. The artist's main focus is the interpretation and alteration of theimage conveyed through the object in the painting and the artist's ownperspective.

As a painter, one focuses on eliminating anythingthat's not essential to interpreting the object being imaged, similar to theprocess of rigging. By omitting unnecessary layers and processes, the paintercan fully convey the image of the object, which has been reinterpreted andredefined. The exhibition 『Rigger』 showcases paintings and screens featuringachromatic forms that minimize superfluous colors, leaving only the painting'sessence.

The current era places significant importance on theartist's intention or the viewer's interpretation when it comes to a work'smeaning. As we move closer to the end of traditional painting, artist Hamattempts to engage with the artistry and essence of painting itself. The exhibition 『Rigger』 provides a spacefor contemplating the fundamental nature of painting as seen by a realistpainter. It draws parallels to the rigger, who strips away extraneous layers togive life to a static character.
