허호는 오랫동안 크루징의 장소와 그 안의 관계를 그려왔다. 그러나 작가가 주목한 관계보다 몸과 장소로 이미지가 먼저 설명되는 상황이 반복되면서, 자신의 회화가 무엇을 보여주고 있는지 점차 의문을 갖게 되었다. 이번 전시는 그 의문에서 비롯된 작가의 회화에 관한 고민과 질문에서 시작한다.

“내가 그 안에서 무엇을 보고 있었고, 그것을 어떻게 다시 그릴 수 있을지.”

《Layer on Layer》에서 허호는 기존 그림 위에 다른 물질을 올리고 쌓으며, 그려진 형상을 덮거나 긁어낸다. 이는 이 질문에 대한 답을 찾아가는 회화적 연구의 한 과정이다. 사람을 직접 드러내는 대신, 사람이 머물렀던 지라와 그곳에 남은 흔적을 바라보는 시선에 주목한다. 이전 작업 속 인물과 장소는 물감의 층 아래 가려지지만 완전히 사라지지 않는다.

작가는 과거의 작업을 지우기보다 그 위에 새로운 화면을 만든다. 서로 다른 시간과 기억은 한 화면 안에서 겹치고 남는다.

Hur Ho has long painted cruising sites and the relationships formed within them.

However, as the images came to be read primarily through bodies and places rather than the relationships he sought to focus on, he began to question what his paintings were actually showing. This exhibition begins with the questions and concerns about painting that emerged from this doubt.

"What was I seeing there, and how could I paint it again?"

In Layer on Layer, Hur adds and builds up different materials over existing paintings, covering or scratching away previously painted forms. This process becomes part of his painterly research in search of an answer to that question. Rather than revealing people directly, he turns his attention to the places they once occupied and to the traces left behind. Figures and places from earlier works are obscured beneath layers of paint, but never disappear completely.

Rather than erasing his previous work, Hur Ho creates a new surface over it. Different times and memories overlap and remain within a single image.
