“diptych”
I come from a family of twins. Duality is one of the laws of thermodynamics, isn’t it? No, well it should be. Have you ever noticed how when folks in a room are asked to raise their hands if they are Geminis – they raise both hands? Maybe it’s just me…
The contemporary art of the diptych is fascinating to me. The arranging of seemingly disparate images into a compelling, “rational?” whole is an endeavor that basically eludes attempts at explanation or pedagogy. The medieval diptychs were literal like the opposing pages of a book. Much of the contemporary art of the diptych is about the play of shape, color, tone and content. Contemporary diptychs can tell a story or they can compel the viewer to look around about the images, not so much different than looking at sculpture. They can challenge and they can evoke strong emotion. Or, they can simply be beautiful.
“You asked me how to get out of the finite dimensions when I feel like it. I certainly don’t use logic when I do it. Logic’s the first thing you have to get rid of.” ― J.D. Salinger
