Sculpture of Consciousness Made with Dots
나의 작업은 2차원의 회화와 3차원의 조각, 4차원의 키네틱 등.. 다차원의 존재를 가졌던 예술작품들과 달리, 0차원 조각이라는 개념으로 접근하여, 보이지 않는 의식의 조각을 추구한다. 과학이 발달하면서 예술은 더 높은 차원으로 진행하는 가운데, 나는 가장 근원적 차원인 0차원(물리학에서 창조에 공간이라고 비유되며 빅뱅이 일어났다는) 에서의 예술을 추구한다. 그곳이 가장 근원적 차원이므로, 인간의 예술도 그곳에 있어야 한다고 생각한다.
My works are different from multidimensional arts such as two-dimensional paintings, three-dimensional sculptures or four-dimensional kinetic arts. I approached my work with the concept of zero-dimensional sculpture and sought for an invisible sculpture of consciouness. With the development of science, higher dimensional arts are being created. However, I was seeking the zero-dimensional arts which are the source of every dimension and is often compared to the place of creation that the big bang has occurred. I think the human arts should be there in zero-dimension since it is the most fundamental dimension.
수학에서의 0차원인 점을 이용해서, 나에게 가장 일상적인 사물로 여겨지는 휴지를 대상으로 드로잉 한다. 시시각각 다양한 형태를 가지는 휴지를 이용하여, 관찰자인 나와의 거리를 기준으로 점의 밀도차이를 이용하여 드로잉한다. 빛과 그림자 혹은 색과 투명도에 상관없이 사물의 본질을 담고자 이러한 방식의 드로잉을 선택하였다. 그것은 밤하늘의 은하수처럼 자유롭게 흩어지는 연기 같은 이미지로써, 관객의 개인적 해석에 따라 작품의 의미는 무한히 확장된다.
Using the dots which are considered as zero-dimension in mathematics, I drew the toilet papers which is the most familiar object to me. I drew the toilet papers in various forms. When I drew it, I used the dots' density difference by the distance from me as an observer to the toilet papers. I would like to express the nature of the object free from the light, the shadow, the color and the transparency and this is the reason I chose this kind of drawing method. Its image is like the milky way in the night sky and the smoke scattering in the air. Therefore, the meaning of the work can be extended unlimitedly by the view of each audience.
관객은 휴지조각의 이미지에서 처음 휴지와는 전혀 상관없는 수많은 이야기와 이미지를 상상하게 된다. 이러한 의식의 경험을 통해 관객이 진정으로 원하는 예술을 만나길 희망한다. 그것은 잃어버린 추억이나, 다시 만날 수 없는 사랑하는 존재이거나, 잊을 수 없었던 꿈의 한 장면과 같은 것일 것이다. 예술은 전시장 안에 걸려있는 액자 안에 있는 것이 아니라 우리 마음속에 있다는 것을 말하고자 한다.
그런 의미에서, 나의 조각은 관객의 의식속에서 각기 다른 형태로 존재하게 되는 “의식의 조각”이다.
From the sculpture of toilet paper, the audiences can imagine a lot of stories and images irrelevant to the original toilet paper. I hope the audiences could be able to meet the art they really wanted from this experiences. It might like the lost memory or the loved one who is never able to meet again or a scene from the dreams they can't forget. What I wanted to say is that the art is not in the frames hang in the exhibitions but in our hearts.
In that sense, my work is “the sculpture of consciousness” that exist in the different form in each audience.
